At diagnosis you will be provided with a Blood Glucose Meter by your diabetes educator. This will often be an Optium Neo Meter as it checks both Blood Glucose Levels (BGLs) and Blood Ketone Levels. The Optium Neo Meter has a 5 year warranty so if you need a replacement meter due to a malfunction or a broken part you can contact Abbott via Customer Care - Freestyle
DO NOT LEAVE ANY METER IN THE REACH OF YOUNG CHILDREN. Many meters have BUTTON BATTERIES. Swallowing button batteries can be fatal and emergency medical care is essential if there is any chance a child has swallowed them.
If your meter stops working try replacing the batteries. The button case is either on the side or back of the meter
Many newer meters are either recharagable or have locked casing for the batteries and we recommend that any meter purchased with button batteries have a locked button case. All Neo meters supplied now have a locked battery case and batteries cannot be replaced. When the low battery warning shows, call Abbott customer care for a replacement meter on 1800 801 478
Replacement meters can also be purchased from most chemists for ~ $50.
Alternatively, the Abbott Freestyle Libre Reader costs $95 and is powered by a rechargeable battery. This reader checks blood glucose and ketones and is also used to scan the Libre Flash glucose monitor.
If you are using Flash Glucose Monitoring, you can access a free reader from www.scanMySensor.com.au
