About Haematology

  • The haematology and transfusion laboratory operates 24 hours per day 7 days per week providing a fast turnaround for routine testing such as full blood count, coagulation and blood group testing and for provision of blood and blood products.

The laboratory provides specialist diagnostic testing for disorders of thrombosis and haemostasis including Haemophilia, Von Willebrand disease, Lupus anticoagulant, factor assays, inhibitor studies, and thrombophilia screening.

Our laboratory has expertise in the performance of thalassaemia and Haemoglobinopathy testing, Blood Film morphology, and bone marrow examination.  The Blood Transfusion service provides crucial support for the RCH as a paediatric trauma centre, supports solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant programs, the cardiac surgery program, the Henry Ekert Haemophilia Treatment Centre and has expertise in all aspects of neonatal and paediatric transfusion support. The laboratory also supports patients at the  Royal Women's Hospital who require complex antibody investigation and intrauterine transfusion support.
