Education and Training
The department of anaesthesia and pain management at the RCH is committed to the education and training of anaesthetists who provide paediatric anaesthesia to children in Victoria, across Australia and overseas. We are involved in the education and training of medical students, anaesthetic registrars and fellows, as well as other specialist personnel. Registrars positions are filled by registrars from the North-Western and Eastern rotational programs in Victoria. The RCH has no role in the selection of rotating registrars.
Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowships
Advanced training positions in paediatric anaesthesia (fellowships) are appointed through a competitive process with up to 12 positions available per year. One position is a combined clinical/research role suitable for an anaesthetist aiming to pursue an academic career. The clinical exposure and terms and conditions of this position are identical to the other positions.

Observers and Honorary Fellowships
This program runs separately and in parallel to formal training pathways for anaesthetic registrars and fellows with the combined goal of strengthening the skillset and capacity of the paediatric anaesthesia workforce. We facilitate a small number of honorary fellowships each year. These are fixed term contracts with a maximium duration of 6 month, sabbatical applications are prioritised. The visitor program is also a vehicle through which we can foster and grow international connections for the purpose of quality improvement and research collaboration. Clinicians collaborating on research projects with members of the department of anaesthesia through the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) receive affiliate contracts with the RCH and can attend theatre whilst conducting their research. We limit the number of visiting clinicians to ensure a quality learning experience is maintained for both trainees and visiting clinicians, as such not all applications for a clinical placement can be facilitated.
