About 10,000 children undergo surgery each year at the RCH. Our surgical team cares for children requiring elective or emergency operations. Once your child has had their surgery, they will be cared for in one of the following ways:

    Day stay

Day-stay patients check-in at Reception J and are admitted to hospital on the day of their surgery. Once their surgery is complete and they are safe for discharge, they can go home on the same day.

Surgical short stay (one night stay)

One-night stay patients check-in at Reception J and are admitted to hospital on the day of surgery. They are moved to theatre for their surgery and then monitored until awake. Afterward, they are transferred to Possum Ward (surgical short stay) from where they are discharged the following day.

Inpatient (admission on day of surgery)

These patients check-in at Reception J and are admitted to the hospital on the day of their surgery. They proceed through pre-operative preparation and into the operating theatre.  After surgery, they move to an inpatient ward where they may remain for a few days.

    Inpatient

Sometimes patients are already admitted to hospital and can transfer from a ward or the emergency department straight to the pre-operative preparation area and into the operating theatre. Following surgery, they may go to:

    • Rosella ward (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit)
    • Recovery then to an inpatient ward
    • Possum - Surgical Short Stay for an overnight stay
    • Recovery then home the same day
