Programs overview

  • The RCH Simulation team facilitate both half day and full day courses, in addition to supporting departmental shorter simulation sessions. Our courses and programs have been categorised into four areas:

    Deteriorating Patient Programs:

The Deteriorating Patient simulation sessions focus on training teams to understand how human factors influence our ability to work as a team in challenging situations. Participants have the opportunity to practice these principles with Inter-professional simulated scenarios, each one followed by a debrief and discussion to explore the team performance.  Longer programs may include technical and communication skills workshops to complement learnings with the simulated scenarios.

    Communication Programs:

The  RCH Communication Program focus on training healthcare workers on key communication strategies to utilise during complex conversations between colleagues, patients, and their families.  Participants have the opportunity to attend the workshop followed by coaching through case scenarios relevant to the communication strategy.  Additionally, for some programs, participants are able to practise their communication learnings with actors during a simulated scenario following the workshop and coaching sessions.

The RCH Simulation Train the Trainer Program:

The RCH Simulation Train the Trainer Program focuses on training healthcare workers to understand the basis of simulation-based education and utilise all facets of simulation as an educational tool.  The first day focuses on simulation methodology and developing and designing simulation sessions and scenarios whilst the second day focuses on training in debriefing, utilising debrief techniques from the Harvard Centre for Medical Simulation in addition to other methods of debriefing.

    Skills Training

The RCH Simulation Team have developed many skill packages relevant to the varied practical needs across departments, such as the Advanced Life Support Defibrillation package and Intraosseous insertion. In addition, we have worked with educators across the hospital to develop other skills packages which have since been incorporated into departmental training.  Please feel free to contact us at simulation@rch.org.au to assist in developing skills packages related to the needs of your department.
