To order this test, one of the four criteria below should be met. If no criteria are met please discuss with the Clinical Microbiologist on-call.

The specific collection kit- Copan UTM-RT™ MUST be used.  This collection kit is available from Laboratory Services Specimen Reception level 4 Royal Children’s Hospital or Core Laboratory Specimen Reception level 5 at Royal Women’s Hospital. Only 1 swab is required. Please use the thin flocked swab to obtain a combined deep nasal and throat sample and discard the unused swab.

   1. Is this a pre-procedure screening test where the procedure cannot be safely delayed waiting for a routine test (usually available in six hours)?

   2. Is this for bed management purposes at the request of the hospital bed manager?

   3. Is this for a donor or recipient prior to organ transplant?

   4. Is this for exposure management purposes as per the request of Infection Prevention and Control?


Please note for patients already in quarantine a rapid test is not indicated.

There are no special requirements for transport of samples. They can be transported as routine diagnostic samples for testing. Preference is to deliver directly in person to Specimen Reception to expedite testing.

Testing should be carried out in line with the recommendations and case definitions from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Section.
