Communication

  • The Simulation Team have developed and are developing, a number of communication workshops which will be available for staff to attend. These workshops can also be run by the Simulation Team within RCH hospital departments depending on specific needs.

    Supportive Leadership following Challenging Events (2020)

    The Simulation team (Dr Jenni Sokol) will be delivering a three hour course on the leadership required to support your staff following critical evens on the wards.

    Exposure to critical clinical and exposure to challenging events involving extremely sick children can be distressing for staff. This course aims to provide a framework on how to facilitate immediate “guided reflection” around critical clinical events in order to provide support for staff involved.

    Medical, Nursing and Allied Health staff who may be required to facilitate such sessions are encouraged to attend.

    This course is currently directed at RCH staff but generalisable to external participants if they wish to attend.

    The Simulation team (Dr Jenni Sokol) will be delivering a three hour course on how to support administrative and management colleagues following challenging events in which they may be involved with.

    Exposure to challenging events at work can be distressing for staff. This course aims to provide a framework on how to facilitate immediate “guided reflection” around challenging events in order to provide support for staff involved.

    Administrative and Management staff who may be required to facilitate such sessions are encouraged to attend.

    Giving Feedback

    This is a 2 hour interactive workshop around learning a communication framework in order to provide constructive feedback to peer, colleagues or friends.

    Speaking Up for Safety (Previously Graded Assertiveness)

    This is a 2 hour interactive workshop where participants will learn how to provide graded assertiveness in difficult situations with a defined communication framework.

    Breaking Bad News

    This is a 3 hour interactive workshop including a simulation with an actor where participants will learn key communication skills and a communication framework to deliver bad news to patients and parents.

    Open Disclosure

    This is a 3 hour interactive workshop utilising  the RCH framework to "openly disclose" a critical incident to parents following a clinical event that may have impacted their child.  The session includes a workshop, role plays and a simulation with an actor.

    Open Disclosure Recap RCH Staff ONLY

    This is a 2 hour Simulation session to practise utilising the RCH framework for Open Disclosure conversations. This session is for RCH staff who have previously attended the Open Disclosure workshop with role plays, and would like the opportunity to observe and/or participate in a simulation session with an actor,  in order to practice "open disclosure" of a critical incident to parents following a clinical event that may have impacted their child.

    This can be a 1 to 4 hour interactive workshop addressing conversational strategies around talking to families when caring for a dying child.

    Difficult Conversations over the phone
    This can be a 1 to 4 hour interactive workshop addressing key communication skills and language staff can use when dealing with a parent over the phone.
