Craniofacial Surgery

    Pain control

Administer medications as directed for pain (paracetamol and ibuprofen are available from pharmacies without prescription). Avoid aspirin.

    Wound care

Wash your child's hair every day so that the wound is kept clean. Gently pat the head dry and be careful to avoid pulling or putting pressure on staples. Staples or sutures will be removed at the review appointment in the week after discharge.

Your child will probably be tolerating a regular diet soon after surgery. After surgery your child should not engage in rough activity. A helmet may be prescribed for your child to wear.

Seek medical attention if your child has:

    • Increasing pain or pain not relieved by medication
    • Persistent fever
    • General unwellness
    • Wound discharge, bleeding or increasing redness
    • A hard knock to the head
