Ward Rounds and Other Activities

  • Ward Rounds

    On ward rounds (registrar or consultant rounds) you should:

    • Present patients you have seen when possible
    • Learn by observing
      - Watch and reflect on communication with the team, the patient and family
      - Watch and reflect on how the resident and registrar manage multiple roles and competing tasks
      - Ask questions when there is appropriate time and opportunity
    • Offer to take on a role e.g. printing parent information sheets, finding charts, looking up results.  

    General medical team meetings and teaching sessions

    Students should attend the following formal/semi-formal General Medicine teaching opportunities

    • Friday lunchtime Gen med meeting (all students)
    • X-ray and psychosocial meetings (team specific)
    • Attend your unit’s General Paediatric outpatient clinic each week. Ask your team consultants about other clinics they run which you may be able to attend
    • Tuesday afternoon post-outpatient case discussions (team specific)
    • Respiratory, Adolescent and Developmental Medical teams will be guided by individual units on how their time will be allocated to inpatient, outpatient and team activities
