    When your baby is well enough, you can learn to pick up your baby from the bed yourself. Babies prefer this as it involves less handling and is less stressful for your baby.

    Why should you learn how to do a standing transfer?

    • It is less handling for your baby  
    • It may be less stressful for your baby
    • It can increase your confidence and independence 

    Step-by-step standing transfer

    1. With your nurses help ensure all tubes and cords have enough length.
    2. Ensure your chair is behind you and have everything you need close by.
    3. Bring your chest down to your baby and pick them up in their nest or open swaddle. Scoop them directly onto your chest.
    4. Stand up with your baby still nestled into your chest and take a few steps back to the chair.
    5. Your nurse can assist with any equipment attached.
    6. Lower yourself into the chair and get into a comfortable position.
    7. Your nurse will secure any tubing or cords. 
    8. Cover baby with a blanket and enjoy.
