Positive touch ‘hand hugs’

  • Positive touch is a lovely way to support your baby when they are unwell and can’t be picked up for cuddles or to support them through cares or procedures.

Your baby will experience lots of medical touch during their stay in hospital so it is important for them to feel your loving touch frequently. This can help provide comfort and connection for you and your baby.

Positive touch, sometimes called ‘still touch’ or ‘hand hugs’ is something that you can do with your baby to improve their development and help bonding. Pair it with your voice and scent.

How to do positive touch with your baby

    1. Talk to your baby in a soft voice before touching them so they know you are there and they are about to be touched.
    2. Place firm but gentle hands cupping their feet, head or torso. If you’re not sure where to put your hands because of medical equipment, your nurse will be happy to help.
    3. Avoid stroking as this may be too much stimulus for your baby while they are unwell.
    4. Watch your baby’s cues and respond to them.
    5. When you have finished, slowly remove one hand at a time so they can adjust to the change.
