The Parent Engagement Resource, or PER, is a tool to support practitioners in their work with families. The PER includes a training package and 16 questions that can help practitioners to respond to parent’s concerns about some of the psychosocial factors that might adversely affect their child’s development and wellbeing.
In 2012, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and The Royal Children’s Hospital Centre for Community Child Health were funded by the Commonwealth Government to undertake a national cluster randomised trial of the PER. The trial involved practitioners from ten different sites around Australia and the families they work with.
This trial tested whether administering the PER increases the detection of psychosocial concerns held by families, compared to usual practice. The findings of the trial were then used to develop recommendations about the further use of the PER across Australia.
