Blood Culture bottle labelling

Specimen identification labels are to be placed flat as displayed below.  Label must not obscure the bottle barcode or volume window.

Laboratory notes

  • Each site must have separate laboratory number
  • Each laboratory number can have up to 2 blood culture bottles e.g. PF Plus and FA Plus/ FN Plus (mycoplasma bottle not included)
  • If 2 bottles are received (same colour) but 2 different sites

      – enter as TWO separate lab numbers. Write the corresponding site on the Bottle ID barcode label on the request slip.

  • If two different coloured bottles received (same site) – these are to be entered on ONE laboratory number.
  • Peel the detachable tag of the Bottle ID barcode and affix to the request slip.
  • Register the specimen to access the Laboratory number barcode (aliquot label) in central specimen reception.
  • Affix the aliquot label containing the Laboratory number (LN) barcode at the bottom of the patient identifier in a vertical orientation. The lab number barcode and the bottle barcode orientation must be the same.
  • After hours, place registered blood culture bottles on the VIRTUO™ as soon as possible by Core Lab staff.
  •  Do NOT store in incubator or leave on the bench at room temperature
