 Minimum Volume

Send whole specimen to Lab. A minimum 20g of faeces required PLUS 0.5ml Blood.   

Random specimens are not suitable

Test ONLY performed on RCH patients.

A serum specimen collected within 24 hours either side of the faecal specimen is also required. 

ENSURE WEIGHT OF EMPTY CONTAINER IS WRITTEN ON THE SPECIMEN LABEL PRIOR TO COLLECTION OF SAMPLE INTO THE CONTAINER

Special Note: For neonatal collections, 24hr timed faeces collections are suitable but a minimum volume of 20g of faeces is still required PLUS 0.5ml Blood.

SPECIMEN RECEPTION NOTES:
Register in Medipath: FAAT 

Forward the specimens to Complex Biochemistry for temporary frozen storage of faecal specimen and serum. NOTE: if a serum specimen was not received, DO NOT reject- Complex Biochemistry will check for a previous specimen.

LABORATORY NOTES:

Complex Biochemistry staff perform specimen checking and validation as per BI-P-044.

If suitable for testing,  SAFAAT2 procedure code is automatically assigned and the specimens are placed in the SR -70C freezer 'SAFAAT2 Send away box' for routine send away preparation to the external testing laboratory.

Store and transport frozen.

Send to testing laboratory on dry ice. Do not pack dry ice in a sealed container.  Use appropriate PPE.
