About Social Work

Social Workers provide counselling and other services that may be needed when a child has a physical and/or emotional health problem or disability.  Some of the ways they help are:

• Supporting families during times of crisis.
• Offering individual counselling for children, teenagers, young adult patients, parents, couples and families.
• Helping with preparations for going home.
• Locating comunity resources and support groups.
• Providing relevant information and education and linking families with them.
• Assisting communication with health care providers.
• Representing patients and families within the hospital and to outside agencies.
• Referral to specialist community counsellors e.g. marital, domestic violence, financial, gambling, drug and alcohol.
• Samaritan Funds: limited emergency financial assistance available.

Staff Allocation

The Social Work Department provides service to all wards and units in the hospital.  Its main emphasis is on work with inpatients.

The department is divided into small teams to facilitate continuity of coverage and promote close working relationships with the wards and units to which social workers are allocated.
