Konakion MM Paediatric – (Phytomenadione/Vitamin K)

  • (2 mg in 0.2 mL)

    VITAMIN K

    Fat-soluble vitamin, coagulation factor.

    Preparations

    Inj: 10 mg/1 mL and 2 mg/0.2 mL.

    Tablet: 10 mg.

    IV Preparation and Compatibilities

    Do not mix with infusion fluids.

    Dose

    Vitamin K prophylaxis (prevention of haemorrhagic disease of the newborn).

    IM:

    Preferred route.

    Give as a single dose on day 1 of life.

    Birth weight < 1.5kg 0.5 mg (0.05 mL)
    Birth weight ≥ 1.5kg 1 mg (0.1 mL)

    Oral:

    May be used as an alternative to IM, but must be given as a THREE-dose regimen. Use Konakion MM® for oral dosing.

    Three oral doses:

    At birth 2 mg (0.2 mL)
    At 3 to 5 days of life 2 mg (0.2 mL)
    At 4 weeks of life 2 mg (0.2 mL)

    Treatment of Vitamin K deficient haemorrhagic disease:

    IV:

    1 mg slowly. Urgent replacement of clotting factors may also be necessary.

    CAUTION:  Give IV doses slowly due to risk of anaphylaxis.
