1211 Blood Flow Rate

  • Blood Flow Rate

Blood Flow Rate is determined by target clearance. Use the Dialyser performance summary data provided by the manufacturer. As a guide-Most dialysers provide similar rates of urea clearance up to 100ml/min BFR. (1ml/min urea clearance for every 1ml/min BFR up to 100 ml/min).

    Example

    First session

When commencing HDx begin with target urea clearance of 1.5-2 ml/min/kg body weight.  Turn blood flow up slowly over the first half hour

    Second session

Urea clearance of 2-3 ml/min/kg body weight.  Turn blood flow up slowly over the first half hour

    Third session

Urea clearance of 2-3 ml/min/kg body weight.  Turn blood flow up slowly over the first half hour

Gradually increase depending on condition and size of child, to maintenance clearance of 3-5 ml/min/kg.

The clearance performance and specifications of the dialyser must be known in order to calculate the Blood Flow Rate.

The above regime is only a guideline.

The physician shall order the specifics of the dialysis procedure each time initially, and every 2nd week once established on haemodialysis
