Speech Pathology

Referral Information - Speech Pathology

Both inpatients and outpatients are referred to RCH Speech Pathology services.

Inpatients

Hospital clinical staff, such as nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers, will refer your child to the Speech Pathology Department. In addition, if you believe your child should see a speech pathologist, you can request a referral be made by talking to the staff caring for your child.

All referrals are accepted by the Speech Pathology Department, which then seeks to respond to the referral within 24 hours of receiving the referral. There is, however, no service on weekends.

Outpatients

Community health professionals can refer your child to the Speech Pathology Department. The Royal Children's Hospital consults with clients who require a second opinion due to the complexity of the condition. articulation therapy 3
The intake speech pathologist will determine the correct path of action and contact, in writing, the person who referred you and attach a copy of the letter for yourself if it is determined that the referral will not be accepted. If the referral is accepted, a priority will be assigned and parents contacted directly to make an appointment. An appointment letter will then be sent to the child's home.

Sometimes further clarification is required in relation to the reason for referral. You may be contacted in writing or by telephone to obtain more details about the referral. Once these details are obtained, the intake speech pathologist will contact you in writing with an appointment time or to refer you to another service provider.

You will be contacted by the Speech Pathology Department with an appointment letter after a referral has been received and accepted (refer to details in Eligibility Criteria) This letter will let you know the date and time of your child's appointment. Depending on the reason for referral, there may be a wait of some weeks before your child can be seen in the Speech Pathology Department.

If you have not received an appointment letter after 4 weeks, you may enquire about the status of your child's referral by calling 9345 9300, and asking to speak to the Speech Pathology Intake Coordinator.
