Intraosseous Access Specimen

Test Name
Intraosseous Access Specimen
Specimen Type

Aspirated bone marrow from intraosseous access, is only suitable for certain laboratory tests such as innoculation of blood culture bottles, bedside glucometer testing and handheld istat intruments.

See comment below.

Comments

Most laboratory tests cannot be performed on aspirated bone marrow from an intraosseous access specimen, as the particulate matter may block and cause significant damage to the laboratory instruments.

For urgent transfusion support in the absence of a pre-transfusion sample, universal donor products (Group O red cells, Group AB plasma) will be issued.

Aspirated bone marrow is, however, suitable for the innoculation of blood culture bottles, bedside glucometer testing and handheld istat intruments.
