Social workers provide a range of support and services that may be needed when a child is admitted to hospital.

The Social Work department offers an After-Hours Oncall service. This is for families who are experiencing acute trauma and crisis.
This service is only accessed through hospital staff for families in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.
The Social Work department offers assistance to families when a child has died who is a patient of the hospital. This service is supported by two specialist bereavement support programs
The Family Bereavement Support Programme offers bereavement counselling, monthly evening parent support groups, annual sibling bereavement support group, occassional groups for grandparents who are bereaved, referrals to specialist community support services, education information and support to hospital staff about bereavement issues.The programme also publishes a Monthly Newsletter as a record of the group meetings. The Hospital Bereavement Services Coordinator is responsible for policy, procedure and education to hospital staff in relation to working with bereaved families.
A number of social work staff coordinate patient and parent support groups throughout the hospital. Many social workers also co-facilitate and present at a number of multidisciplinary presentations, information and education sessions delivered during the year. A Centrelink officer visits the hospital each week and appointments are made by Social Work staff for parents, carers and patients of the hospital.
Hospital-Based Financial Counselling is offered by Kildonan Uniting Care, in partnership with Origin Energy. Appointments are made by Social Work satff for parents, carers and patients of the hospital.
