Chair - Dr Renata Kukuruzovic |
At the initiative of former CEO, Dr Tony Cull, RCHI established a working party which was initially Chaired by Professor Graeme Barnes, to explore what the Royal Children’s Hospital could do to make a contribution to improving the health of indigenous Australian children.
A grant of $11,000 from the Debbie Stach Memorial Fund was used to employ a senior paediatrician, Dr Renata Kukuruzovic, for a day a week for 6 months. Her assignment was to discuss what is practical with key people at RCH, the Department of Human Services and the regional paediatricians.Consultations were held with indigenous leaders, academics and health workers as well as with hospital and university staff.
The information gathered in this scoping exercise was used to prepare a document for the RCH Management and subsequently the Board, requesting Board approval and support for the establishment of a multidisciplinary clinic based at RCH to serve indigenous children with complex medical needs.
This support was given and start-up funding from the RCH Foundation was granted in October 2007.
