Project Description

In this major project, which ran over three years, the University of Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta provided medical support and development assistance in areas of Aceh that were devastated by the 26 December 2004 tsunami. The role of RCHI was to manage the project on behalf of the donor, World Vision Australia, and to provide technical advice. The project's four components were

  1. to ensure adequate levels of medical and nursing staff at the Cut Nhat Dien Hospital
  2. to establish and provide two community-based mental health services
  3. to improve information services and data collection and
  4. an IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illness) training program

Primary grant holder status was transferred to the Australian International Health Institute at the University of Melbourne in January 2006. Professor Garry Warne was Project Director, Dr Krishna Hort (AIHI) was appointed Associate Project Director and Ms Mia Urbano (AIHI) was Project Manager. Technical advisers from Melbourne were A/Prof Trevor Duke (University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics) and Ruth Wraith (former Head of Psychotherapy at RCH). An international Project Management Group was also established to guide the project.
