    Health Information Services (HIS) provides a range of services for The Royal Children's Hospital including record retrieval, clinical coding, system administration and forms design. Health Information Managers (HIMs) within HIS have many years of experience in information management and can provide advice and guidance to staff and the wider community on all aspects of health information management.

    Location: HIS is located on the Lower Ground floor of the East Building at RCH. We can be accessed via the Green lifts or the stairs next to Degani's on the ground floor. All staff must be wearing a hospital identification badge to access patient information in HIS.

    The functions of HIS

    1. To retrieve, supply and maintain medical records as required for direct patient care. 
    2. To provide and maintain an efficient record storage system in which patient information is kept safe from loss, damage and unauthorised access.
    3. To ensure diagnosis and procedure coding is performed in an accurate and timely manner to enable optimal DRG assignment.
    4. To provide a medical transcription service for clinical staff, typing letters and reports to referring clinicians.
    5. To collect statistical data on the Hospital's activity and throughput, and disseminate the information to management and external authorities within the required timeframe for funding purposes.
    6. To provide health information to both internal and external requestors, for planning, research, education, patient care, freedom of information requests and other purposes, in accordance with hospital policies and statutory requirements.
    7. To maintain registers, indexes and databases of patients and health information.
    8. To provide advice and education on casemix related issues, which involve documentation, coding and DRG allocation.
    9. To ensure the design and content of the medical record meets the needs of users and conforms to recognised standards.
    10. To provide advice to other hospital departments in relation to records (clinical and non-clinical), including design, retention, storage and disposal.
