Insuflon™ removal guide

  • Note: This guideline is currently under review.

This guide was created as part of the Clinical Guideline (Nursing): Subcutaneous Catheter devices; Management of Insuflon ™ and BD Saf-T-Intima™ devices

     Equipment

    • Bandaid or transparent occlusive dressing
    • Gauze

    Procedure

    1. Perform hand hygiene and assemble equipment
    2. Explain the procedure to the child (if appropriate) and parents/caregivers
    3. Utilise an aseptic technique and non sterile gloves for removal
    4. Remove the Insuflon™ dressing from the skin, it may be helpful to place a small amount of pressure on the wings of the Insuflon™ as you remove the dressing
    5. Withdraw the Insuflon™from the insertion site in one quick, smooth movement
    6. Apply gauze over insertion site if required to absorb any exudate
    7. A bandaid or transparent occlusive dressing can be placed on the site depending on the preference of the patient and parents/caregivers. If there is an increased amount of exudate from the site place an absorbent dressing onto the site and observe for further exudate or signs of infection such as redness or inflammation
    8. Dispose of any waste in the appropriate containers
    9. Perform hand hygiene.
    10. Complete appropriate documentation; record the date and reason for removal of the Insuflon™ in the Inpatient Progress Notes MR660/A

    Other considerations

    • If the Insuflon™ is to be removed post administration of subcutaneous medication, a minimum of 15-30 minutes should elapse before removal.
