The Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club was once a 'mens only club'.
The wives of the players would accompany them to the club, and sit watching them play. One day, one of the husbands suggested that they become proactive and raise money for him to purchase a dental chair for the dentistry at the Royal Children's Hospital, and they did. Then another husband, also a doctor at the hospital, asked them to raise funds for his department. And this is how the Kooyong Auxiliary began. This group continues to fund the cost of equipment, research and educational programs. Some of their fundraising efforts have included a presentation by celebrated ceramic artist, Alistair Whyte; the Blast Off to Christmas dinner dance; lunch and tickets for the Commonwealth Bank International at Kooyong; and the annual Grass Tennis Tournament.
This year is the 70th birthday of this auxiliary and as I step down from the Presidency, I think of all the people over the last 70 years who have worked so tirelessly and selflessly to raise funds for the Hospitals wish list. We are holding a black tie dinner dance as we have over the last two years, to celebrate this with the 20 piece Rathdowne Street Big Band kindly donating their time once again to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The Committee I have worked with have been wonderful, as have the helpers on the days we have run functions. This year we will donate $35,000 to the hospital, and last year we donated $30,000.
A substantial part of our fundraising is the “Behind the scenes” organisation of the Committee and the donation of raffle prizes by generous sponsors. Also the Gift Stall, run by Mrs. Phyllis George who donates and designs many articles and produce, and sells them on our card days, often raising over $1000 on the day. Thankyou Phyllis, for all that you do.
Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club is a great sponsor of this Auxiliary as we can always count on the consistent efforts of the staff to ensure that the meetings and functions run smoothly.
Marie Devereaux our past President has kindly taken on the role of our Patron and is still a member of our Committee as are Carmel, Caroline, Joan, Marj, Marie, Edna, Thais, Pam, Lesley, and some new Committee members this year; Denise, Dorothy, Margo, and Yvonne, who I am sure will be most helpful as Committee contributors. We are also holding some meetings at night, which will allow working members to attend meetings.
I would like to thank all these ladies for the wonderful work that occurs so that all functions are of the highest standard; the ladies tennis day in March, the two card days, the black tie ball and this year a fashion and hat parade in September.
