The Inverloch Auxiliary supports the Diabetes and Endocrinology Unit at the hospital. They hold one major event a year; the Annual Inverloch Diabetic Dinner Dance and Auction. A luncheon is also held during Diabetic Week. Their efforts have supported the setting up, and all on-going costs of a complicated screening program for diabetic children. Funds also go towards further research.
They danced, they ate, they bid for select prizes and all the while helped Diabetic children around
More than 280 people from Inverloch, Leongatha, Wonthaggi and Melbourne attended the dance held at the Inverloch Community Centre.
The ball is the sole source of funding for the vital program and without the dedication of the volunteer organizers, children with insulin dependent diabetes would be at risk of complications during their teenage years, risks such as blindness, heart attack, dialysis or limb amputation.
The screening program checks 1,400 children every year for heart, kidney, vascular and eye complications. Since the Dinner Dance event commenced ten years ago the incidence of complications has dropped from thirty per cent of children tested to one per cent.
International news agency Reuters announced a donation of $20,000 to support the ongoing work of the Auxiliary. These funds will be used specifically to screen diabetic children for anxiety and depression, mental health issues that are becoming more frequent amount young diabetic suffers.
One of the key organizers, Kerrie Beauglehall of Inverloch thanked the community for yet another passionate outpouring of support.
Kerrie has been the driving force behind the Inverloch Diabetic Unit Auxiliary since her daughter Carla was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Carla is now grown up and no longer receiving her health care from the Royal Children’s Hospital; however, Kerrie and her husband Ross and their very supportive team continue to work tirelessly to ensure that children learning to live with diabetes have the best chance of maintaining good health.
