The Black Rock Auxiliary was formed in 1922 by a group of ladies living in the Black Rock area, and after many years was reformed in early 1970 by Mrs Dianna Fletcher, who is still a member. Over the years they have raised vital funds to help the hospital continue it's excellent work. Some of their activities in the past year have included: luncheons, video nights, film evenings, Cuppa for Kids, a Hand and Feet Massaging Session, Christmas in June, and a dinner and Dutch Auction.
The year 2007 has been a rather mixed bag for our ladies. During February we had our first stall for the year at the hospital which went very well. We had a further four stalls during the rest of the year which our members found very rewarding and met some really wonderful families.
The looks on some of the children’s faces when they buy something makes us feel very humble. I would also like to thank two of Jan’s friends; Julie & Leonie, who also helped us out on the stall when some of our members were unable to attend. This is so much appreciated.
A fashion evening held at Toni’s residence during March was most enjoyable. It was well attended and the fashions shown were well liked. Another fundraiser members and their friends enjoyed was a trip down to Dromana to visit “Heronswood” Garden and Nursery. We started with a delightful morning tea followed by a walk around the magnificent gardens and finishing up in the nursery with some purchases being made.
We again had a luncheon and a dinner at Cilantro Training Restaurant situated at Holmesglen TAFE, Moorabbin, which were both patronised very well and had raffles on both occasions. Early May, Renee kindly hosted a luncheon at her home for members. We had a great day. Good food, good company and many laughs. Sadly, during this month, one of our longest serving members, Coral Willard, was diagnosed with acute myeloid Leukemia. This was a great shock to all of us. Coral had been a hard working and dedicated member for over 30 years and during that time served as Treasurer for seven years and had been President many times. She always kept us on our toes, which I had personally admired, and given us many laughs. Sadly, in early August, she lost her battle and left us feeling devastated. She will never be forgotten.
Eventually, we picked ourselves up and in the latter part of part of the year we had a wonderful “Christmas Dinner in July” at Jan Jorgensen’s, also a card and gift wrapping evening, DVD evening and Cuppa for Kids at Wendy’s, which was very successful and raised a great sum of money. Many thanks to Wendy and her many generous friends, also to all members who contributed and helped out on the day. We finished the year off by a dinner get-together at Dianna’s, again very pleasant, a trip down to Langwarrin to visit the McLelland Gallery including lunch, after walking around the gardens and looking at all the sculptures, and finally a brunch at “Café Fidama” in Yarraville with many friends and members, hosted by Wendy Campbell’s daughter and son-in-law.
Thanks once again to all members and friends of Margaret, Wendy and Jan for their time and support in helping us once again have a successful year. A special thanks to Renee as Secretary and Wendy as Treasurer, your hard work is much appreciated by me. In 2008 we look forward to much success in our efforts in fundraising.
