Beyond Sight was established by a group of parents whose children were diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer called Retinoblastoma - Cancer of the eye. Their goal, when they began, was to raise $150,000 to purchase a Retcam a retinal digital camera for the Ophthalmology Department. Through their fundraising events including a Trivia Night, Gala Ball/Auction, generous donations from the public and more modest fundraising activities the last financial year enabled them to fulfil their dream.
The fundraising activities for Beyond Sight had been quiet this year until the Valavanis family joined our auxiliary. Their son Sam has been battling Retinoblastoma for many years with success and now sadly Sam has lost both eyes. To ensure that Sam has as many happy memories as possible stored away in his memory, Lisa, her husband and family friends put on a Family Fun Day in their local neighbourhood at
Beyond Sight has had constant media coverage throughout the year although the main thrust of our efforts was to educate people that early diagnosis of Retinoblastomo is crucial, it was a point that was continually neglected in the stories that went to press.
The Specialists have been working extremely hard to ensure that the public is aware of the symptoms and makes immediate contact with doctors and/or seek an ophthalmologist referral.
We have welcomed new members to our committee who have injected enthusiasm and knowledge and we look forward to a positive relationship in the future.
This year we aim to purchase a new laptop and printer for the Chief Orthoptist along with the mammoth task of once again raising around $200,000K to replace our aged Retcam, which takes pictures of the Retina.
