The Victorian Paediatric Palliative Care Program

In Victoria, Australia, The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Very Special Kids (VSK) and Monash Medical Centre (MMC) received funding from the Department of Human Services to establish a consultation-liaison team responsible for the facilitation of care of children with palliative care needs and their families. The Victorian Paediatric Palliative Care Program team comprises a Paediatrician and a Case Manager/Social Worker, who work closely with liaison nurses from each of the member organisations to identify children, coordinate care and provide appropriate advice regarding various aspects of patient management. Educational activities for staff from both hospital and community agencies are also offered.

The program is not restricted to children with cancer but is available to the family of any child with a life-threatening or life-limiting illness. The team do not provide direct patient care. Rather, team members facilitate better communication between tertiary institutions and care providers in the community thus allowing more children to be cared for at home by palliative care agencies and other services. An advisory committee has been formed with representatives from a wide range of constituencies. Inquiries and suggestions from paediatricians, general practitioners, palliative care providers and other relevant bodies are invited.
