About the Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit
The Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit has been meeting the needs of refered patients for over 45 years. In 1989 the Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit was redeveloped through the generous donation of The Hugh Williamson Foundation. In recognition of the Foundation's commitment and ongoing support the department's name is now the Hugh Williamson Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit.
The Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit provides orthoses (braces/supportive devices) and prostheses (artificial limbs) to children and adolescents who have acute and/or chronic conditions requiring treatment. Orthotists and Prosthetists are skilled in a range of neuromusculo-skeletal conditions and their associated treatment. Relationships with other Allied Health professionals are utilized to provide optimal treatment plans using multidisciplinary management.
This service provides both in-patient and out-patient care through an appointment based system operating between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm. Appointments can be made through the Contact Us link.
Eligibility Criteria
Due to high demand on services of this department eligibility criteria must be met before a child is accepted for treatment by the Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit. Patients must also have a valid referral in order to book an appointment. The department accepts both public and private referrals however private patients are subject to fees for both the orthoses or prostheses and clinical time.
If a patient is receiving regular treatment and are nearing 18 years of age they will be advised of a number of appropriate facilities that can continue their care. A letter summarising the patients' treatment history can be sent on request to the facility they choose. Lists of alternate adult facilities can be resourced through the National Center for Prosthetics and Orthotics website.
