About Ophthalmology Department

  • The mission of the Department of Ophthalmology is to ensure optimum ocular and visual health outcomes for children by the provision and promotion of eye health care and research, education and advocacy.

    What we do

    • The Department provides primary through to tertiary care for all paediatric ocular and visual disorders. This involves diagnostic evaluation and treatment.
    • Department members have specific expertise in the management of eye diseases in children including: strabismus, amblyopia, cataract, glaucoma, retinal tumours, retinopathy of prematurity and genetic eye disease.
    • We also have specific expertise in the management of the eye disease as it relates to general disease in children. Co-operation with Neurology and Neurosurgery via the Children's Neuroscience Centre is central to this role.
    • Primary services are provided to children who live in the metropolitan area with secondary and tertiary services being provided for Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and eastern SA and elsewhere.
