Why offer continuing education in perinatal care?
Advances in perinatal care, particularly over the past twenty years, have improved the outcome for 'at risk' mothers and their newborn infants, as evidenced by a continual reduction in perinatal mortality and morbidity. Continued improvement in perinatal outcome depends on all health professionals at all levels of care accepting their responsibility to keep abreast of recent advances in perinatal care by updating their knowledge and clinical skills, to enable them to provide the best possible standard of care within their local environment.
NETS Education view continuing education as an essential requisite for the professional development of registered nurses, midwives, medical staff and allied health professionals involved in perinatal care and the retention of these health professionals in the workforce, thereby reducing attrition rates and promoting the retaining of staff.
