NNU staff have a strong commitment to research as a means of improving outcomes for our patients and their families. Several multidisciplinary research teams work within the unit, studying a wide variety of topics. Their focus includes neonatal neurology, high frequency ventilationend-of-life carePierre Robin Syndromecentral venous access devices and pain management.

The hospital, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, has recently established the first Chair of Neonatal Nursing Research in Australia. Prof. Linda Johnston is the inaugural incumbent of this position. Prof. Johnston leads a program of research that comprises the components of clinical nursing research, development and evaluation of differing models of service delivery and evidence based practice.

Unit staff participate in several studies in collaboration with other departments within the hospital, and with other neonatal units.
