The department provides a 24 hour service by the following provisions:

Monday to Friday: 0845 to 2400 hours. (Limited service after 1715.)

Saturday & Public Holidays: 0800 to 2400 hours. (Limited service after 1715.)

Sundays Good Friday & Christmas Day: 0800 to 2400 hours (limited service)

- All other times outside normal laboratory hours, specimens that require urgent processing are referred to the On-call Scientist after consultation with clinical microbiologists / infectious diseases physicians on-call.
- Cerebrospinal fluid does NOT require consultation with the clinical microbiologists /infectious diseases physicians for after hours testing and should be sent to the CORE Laboratory at RCH or RWH as soon as possible.

- Staff needle stick injuries are referred to another pathology provider via the CORE laboratories. Urgent varicella-zoster virus serology will be performed the next working day.
- There is no other formal after-hours service provided by this laboratory.
