Welcome to the Information webpage of the Medical Imaging Department of the Royal Children's Hospital. The department's team consists of medical imaging technologists, nurses, filing room staff, radiologists, reception staff, and radiology assistants.
The Medical Imaging Department is a specialised department and aims to provide the best possible medical imaging for children. The imaging is performed with specialised paediatric techniques, modern equipment in the best possible surroundings with minimal discomfort and irradiation.
Types of Equipment
The department provides:-

1 emergency and 3 general xray rooms

1 OPG (orthopantomogram) unit

1 multi-slice CT (Computed Tomography) scanner,

2 MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) units

3 Ultrasound units

2 Nuclear Medicine Imaging rooms

1 Digital Fluoroscopy room

1 DSA (Digital Subtraction Angiography) room
These imaging modalities are used in various combinations to provide your doctor with anatomical and functional information about your child's condition. We also provide imaging services to assist surgeons and other doctors during some interventional (including surgical) procedures.
Images
The department has a CR (Computerised Radiography) imaging system for conventional X-rays. All other imaging modalities acquire the medical images in a digital format. Instead of viewing films by holding them up against light, the images are reviewed and reported on a high resolution computer monitor screen. Radiography has becoming filmless and increasingly digital. Computer images are stored in a central computer location and readily viewed in the Medical Imaging Department, in the wards and even remotely by doctors needing to view images while away from the RCH campus.
Paediatric Medical Imaging Fellowships
The Royal Children’s Hospital Medical Imaging Department has 4 general and 1 senior Paediatric Radiology fellowship positions. The general positions are suitable for radiologists who have completed their basic training in Diagnostic Radiology and want to gain experience in paediatric Medical Imaging. Two positions start in February and two in July of each year. The senior position is suitable for candidates who have already completed a fellowship training year in paediatric radiology and wish to spend a second year developing subspecialty skills and being involved in research – this new 1 year position starts in July each year.

This department is mainly funded by government revenue. However, private patients will be billed for their examinations. This money is used for ongoing expenditure, research and new equipment.
