The Graduate Nurse Program aims to support the transition and development of the student to Registered Nurse by supporting learning in a safe and rewarding environment.

The program is committed to enabling life long learning and promotes family-centered practice and delivery of competent nursing care to children and families.

As a graduate nurse you will become an integral part of a multidisciplinary team that is committed to making a difference to the health and wellbeing of infants, children and young adults.

Upon successful completion of the program, opportunities will be plentiful for you to further your career as a Registered Nurse within The Royal Children's Hospital.

There are two steps to applying for a nursing job at the RCH:

Key Selection Criteria

RCH specific criteria (application)

In the written application the applicant must demonstrate:

  • A commitment to learning about infant's, children and young people's health
  • Insight into their current learning needs in transition from student to RN
  • Excellent communication skills and an awareness of interpersonal skills required for nursing in the paediatric setting.

What do I include in my on-line application?

  1. A covering letter which will specifically address our selection criteria above
  2. Reflective writing piece of 250 words (plus or minus 10%) on the following:
    • "How would you live the RCH values in your nursing practice?"
  3. Your curriculum vitae.  This should be a maximum of four pages. Your CV must address the following:
    • Contact details (include full name, address, phone number/s and email address)
    • Post secondary school education history
    • Clinical experience (include number of weeks for each placement)
    • Recent employment history (include responsibilities in each role)
    • Any further professional development undertaken
    • Professional memberships
    • Contact details of 2 nursing referees (include: Name/Position title/Organisation/Contact No.)
    • Please ensure that the last page of your CV addresses the following questions;
      • Have you failed any subjects through-out your nursing degree? If so, please state the subject name and year failed
      • Have you previously, or are you currently registered with any Nurses Board or authority? (If so, please state name of board/authority and registration number)
      • Have you commenced a Graduate Nurse Program in the past?
    • Once you have checked off each of these points, your CV will be ready to lodge as part of your application, alongside your Cover Letter and Reflective Writing Piece.

RCH specific criteria (interview)

In the interview the applicant must demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the structure and content of the Graduate Nurse Program at RCH
  • The ability to critically think, question and reflect
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Attributes of person-centredness.

If selected for interview you will be requested to bring:

  • A certified copy of your university transcript
  • A certified copy of your 3rd year clinical placement reports
  • Your nursing professional references  
  • Completed rotation form
  • Photo ID eg. driver's licence or passport

The interview will consist of a two-person panel and the applicant.  Interviews normally last 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Applications close at RCH on Thursday 30th July 2009 at 5.00pm
  • Interviews commence on Monday 7th September 2009
  • Computer Match results will be available on Monday 19th October 2009.

Structure

  • Approximately 50 placements available
  • 12 month program (including six weeks annual leave)
  • 2 x 6 month clinical rotations
  • Orientation and preceptorship
  • Facilitated learning in the clinical environment
  • Six paid development and learning days - above the allocated supernumerary time and orientation.

Clinical training and assessment

  • Performance appraisal undertaken at six weeks and six months per rotation
  • Paediatric CPR
  • Paediatric drug awareness package
  • Emergency procedures training
  • Smartllift training
  • Unit specific competencies.

    You will be advised by August 24th 2009 if you will be invited for an interview
  • Computer Match results will be available on Monday 19th October 2009.
