Reason for application

  • Perthes  Disease
  • Osteochondral injuries
  • Avascular necrosis of the femoral head  (loss of blood supply to the ball part of the thigh bone)

Physiotherapy 

The patient with a Hip Distractor external fixator must be an active participant in their Physiotherapy program. frequent movement is desirable.

Weight bearing will be determined by the treating surgeon, however limited partial weightbearing is often permitted from the end of the first week.

Nursing Care

 

Common problems 

  • Pin site infections are extremely common in patients undergoing treatment with the Hip Distractor.
  • Pin Site infection
  • Pin Site irritation
  • Loosening of pin at bone insertion point

Loose pin

  • Loss of range of movement at hip / knee
