Limb Reconstruction and lengthening has been performed at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, for a little over ten years as a purely surgeon run service. In November 2000, the Limb Reconstruction Service was formally established, by way of a Government funded start up grant. This enabled the employment of a Clinical Nurse Specialist to coordinate the preparation of children and families for limb reconstruction, streamline the admission and discharge process and provide ongoing care in the postoperative period.
The service has close links with speciality units throughout the Royal Children’s Hospital but in particular with physiotherapy, education institute, orthotics, radiology and clinical genetics. Our patients are drawn from Victoria, Tasmania and Southern New South Wales which has provided a particular challenge in managing patients from a distance. It is hoped that this web site goes part way in addressing the issues for our non metropolitan patients and becomes a useful resource for all.
