No.4: MIMS Online

MIMS Online incorporates data from MIMS abbreviated and full medicines information, product images and consumer medicines information, and offers convenient access to essential information for prescription and non-prescription medicines. The MIMS Online information is updated monthly.

How to connect

MIMS Online is available via Clinical Resources at the RCH website, or from the library's list of databases. No password needed on site. Off-site access requires an Athens login.

Searching

Sample search

Type in the name or part of the name of a drug, then select from the list of possible matches.

Hints:

  • Enter fewer characters to get more choices.
  • When entering the full drug name, be sure to enter it correctly, including the hyphen if there is one. In the example image, entering pentavite (with no hyphen) would return no results.
  • Hovering over the page navigation on the results page invokes a popup showing what is on that page. The example below shows what will be found on page 4 of a search for lignocaine.

Hover navigation

The advanced product information search consists of a number of fields which can be used singly or in combination, but a search term must be entered into the search field.

Use Advanced Image Search to select a combination of options to search for a specific medicine. Options include colour (you may only select a maximum of three core colours), shape and markings.

Prescribing information

The PBS information is only found in the Abbreviated Product Information (PI).

Abbreviated PI vs Full PI

The content in the Abbreviated PI is not necessarily also available in the Full PI. For example, PBS information is only available in the Abbreviated PI because the Full PI is developed by the medicine manufacturer and is TGA approved, while the Abbreviated PI is developed by MIMS editors based on the information in the Full PI and other sources.

Where applicable, and depending on the manufacturer, information such as taking with respect to food, gluten free, lactose free, latex free and so forth may be provided in a separate document by the manufacturer and so appears only in the Abbreviated PI. However, there are also cases where the manufacturer's Full PI does include information such as taking with respect to food, gluten free, lactose free, latex free, and so forth. In such cases, both the Full PI and Abbreviated PI will have this information.

Why so plain?

This site is styled using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). If you can read this message, either you have disabled styles yourself, your browser does not support CSS sufficiently well to be served up the styles, or you are viewing this on a mobile device. Everything here is still readable and usable, it's just not so pretty :)
