Find a family doctor

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH)  encourages all patients to have a regular family doctor (also known as a GP, or General Practitioner) that they feel comfortable with.

If you are a parent, please check that your child's hospital record has the correct GP recorded. This is optional, but if no GP is listed or the details are wrong, then the right GP will not be able to receive a copy of your child's discharge summary.

Choosing a GP

Parents can ask for recommendations for a GP from their:

  • Friends, relatives or other parents at their child's kinder or school.
  • Maternal and Child Health Nurse (MCHN).
  • Local Community Centre.
  • Online.

Type a postcode or suburb then choose 'General practitioner'.
You will need to call a few local GP practices and ask if they provide GP services to children and if they cater for other special needs (such as language).

Both lists contain mainly community paediatricians and specialists who sub-specialise in paediatrics (eg. surgeons and dermatologists).

Neither list includes all paediatricians/paediatric specialists, so you can also look in the yellow pages for paediatricians in your area.
