Primary Care Liaison

Sinusitis

  • This pre-referral guideline covers Sinusitis in children of all ages.

    Initial work-up

    • Physical examination consistent with sinusitis.
    • X-rays of the paranasal sinuses if symptoms are persistent.

    Pre-referral treatment

    • 3-6 weeks of broad-spectrum oral antibiotics.
    • Nasal steroids for 6 weeks.
    • Nasal irrigation with antibiotic solution for 6 weeks.

    When to refer

    • Persistent symptoms despite 6 weeks of appropriate treatment- refer to Medical ENT.
    • Wherein sinusitis is persistent and exacerbates asthma symptoms.
    • Bring documentation of clinical course, treatment to date and response to treatment.
