Abnormal red reflex and or white pupil

  • The following pre-referral guideline covers abnormal red reflex/white pupil. Please see other ophthalmology guidelines as needed including Abnormal pupil reaction and size.

    When to refer

    1: White or "glowing" pupil

    • IMMEDIATE REFERRAL for possible leukocoria
    • Fax to 03 9345 5034 and call 03 9345 6180 to highlight urgent referral.

    2: Absence of red reflex

    • IMMEDIATE REFERRAL
    • Fax to 03 9345 5034 and call 03 9345 6180 to highlight urgent referral.

    Pre-referral treatment

    Pre-referral treatment is not recommended for abnormal red reflex or white pupil.
