Proteinuria

Definition

  • Presence of 1+ protein or more on urine dipstick.

Initial work-up

  • Perform at least 2 consecutive urine dipsticks or urinalyses 1-2 days apart to confirm the diagnosis
  • Check blood pressure and growth
  • Perform a dipstick on early morning and an ambulatory urine sample to look for evidence of orthostatic proteinuria

  • Urine tests:
    • Urinalysis with microscopy
    • Spot urine protein to urine creatinine ratio
                  (N=>30mg/mmol)


  • Serum tests (if persistent):
    • Creatinine/Urea
    • Electrolytes
    • Albumin


Information needed

  • Bring to appointment:
    • First morning void
    • Growth Records
    • Copies of all laboratory tests
    • Copies or originals for all radiological studies with reports.
