Hypertension - pre-referral guideline

 

Initial work-up

  • U&E, Ca
  • Creatinine 
  • FBE

When to refer

  • BP>95th percentile for age and height
  • Symptomatic hypertension such as headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, neurological changes, seizures, CCF or blurred vision.
  • Hypertension with haematuria or proteinuria.
  • Hypertension with extra renal manifestations such as joint pain, rash, joint swelling, haemoptysis, dyspnoea, cough or oedema.

Information needed

  • Copy of blood reports
  • Renal ultrasound if available
  • Echocardiogram
  • Documentation of blood pressure
