Traning & Education
Anticoagulation Education
Most infants and children requiring anticoagulant therapy commence such treatment during an acute hospital admission. At the time of commencing an anticoagulant, families (and where appropriate, the patient) will be provided with basic education regarding the indication for the anticoagulant medication, its action, administration of the medicine, any monitoring requirements and potential side effects of the treatment. During an outpatient appointment scheduled within 2 weeks of discharge, the Anticoagulation Service Clinical Nurse Consultant provides families with more comprehensive education regarding the anticoagulant medication their child requires. All the information given to families about the anticoagulant medicine prescribed to their child is reinforced by giving them a written information sheet that is specifically related to the anticoagulant that has been prescribed to their child.
Home INR Monitoring Program
For patients requiring long-term or life-long warfarin therapy, the Anticoagulation Service offers a Home INR Monitoring Program. This program provides families with the opportunity to perform the regular blood monitoring tests (INRs) required by patients taking warfarin in the comfort and convenience of their home. Participation in this program requires the satisfactory completion of a full day training program, incorporating practical and theoretical teaching. These training programs are offered two to three times each year. Families interested in being considered for participation in this program should contact the Anticoagulation Service on 9345 5827 to register their interest.
Haemophilia Teachers Seminar
The Haemophilia Treatment Centre in conjunction with the Haemophilia Foundation of Victoria organises and conducts an annual seminar aimed at providing specific information for teachers with students with Haemophilia. We make every endeavor to run this seminar early in first term of school, as this is when it is most beneficial to all parties.
Flyers are sent out to the parents towards the end of the previous year so that they can pass it on to the school ready for the next year. .
If you have any queries in relation to the seminar you can call the Haemophilia Treatment Centre on 9345 5099.
Please note The Haemophilia Treatment Centre does not contact schools directly unless the family has given them permission and cannot discuss patients with teachers without permission of the parent.
