Sick children can deteriorate rapidly. A major responsibility of a children’s hospital is to recognise when children are deteriorating and prevent adverse outcomes. Recognising clinical deterioration in children with complex or chronic illnesses is especially difficult. A comprehensive approach is needed: training for staff in recognition and resuscitation, listening and responding to the concerns of parents, a system of rapid escalation, clear and effective communication, and the direct involvement of experienced senior paediatricians and nurses in the care of such children. This grand round will describe how RCH is responding to the new national accreditation requirement on the deteriorating patient, and also to the challenges of the new RCH.
