PRIVENT Study

We are looking for patients to enrol in the urinary tract infection study. Please keep the study in mind when you see any patients with a UTI.  We can enrol outpatients or inpatients from anywhere, as long as we (or you) can see them every 3 months for a year.  We can usually organise our follow up so that it doesn't impact on your following-up the patient.

What is the study?

The Prevention of Recurrent urinary tract Infection in children with Vesicoureteric Reflux and Normal Renal Tracts Trial (PRIVENT), is an NHMRC funded randomised trial that is designed to determine whether long-term antibiotics prevents urinary tract infection in children. Antibiotics are given daily to the children over 1 year in which investigators, pharmacy staff and outcome assessors are all blind to the treatment allocation.

Patients are followed up three monthly for 12 months

There are no extra investigations ordered for patients

Who is eligible?

Any child of any age with a recent (i.e. in last 12 months), documented, symptomatic UTI, in whom antibiotic prophylaxis may be considered (e.g. child with recurrent UTI, infant, or documented VU reflux).

The definition of a UTI for the purposes of the study is:

  • Supra pubic aspirate (SPA)  - any growth of a single organism, or
  • Catheter (CSU)  - >107cfu/L of a single organism, or
  • Mid stream (MSU) or clean catch:   >108 cfu/L of a single organism.

Exclusion criteria:

1.      UTI confirmed only on a bag sample

2.      Indwelling catheter

3.      Nosocomial UTI

4.      Severe underlying abnormalities.  These are

  • Urological: (pelviureteric obstruction, vesicoureteric obstruction, posterior urethral valves, complex renal tract malformations, renal calculi)
  • Neurological: spina bifida, spinal cord injuries, neurogenic bladder
  • Immunosuppression

5.      Contraindication to cotrimoxazole treatment (e.g. sulphur allergy, G6PD deficiency)

6.      Non-resident / unable to be followed up.
