Guidelines for presenters

Our Friday lunchtime case presentations take place in the Vernon Collins Lecture Theatre on the 4th floor of the front building. Lunch is served at 12.15 and the meeting starts promptly at 12.30 and finishes at 1.30. It is the best-attended clinical meeting in the hospital, and is well supported by junior and senior medical staff from both our own department and others. Often nursing and Allied Health staff also attend.

Aims of the meeting are to provide:

  • ongoing education for all those present (and others who may access the web archive)
  • an opportunity for discussion about our management guidelines
(although it is not the forum in which guidelines or policy are decided)
  • an opportunity for clinicians to receive input on difficult cases.
  • our residents and registrars with experience at clinical presentations, using the literature, generating PowerPoint presentations etc.
  • a chance for social interaction between our staff

Journal Club

Journal club is held every Tuesday 12.30 - 1.30 in the blue room, except the first Tuesday of the month (Clinical Practice Review meeting). Journal club has not run during term 4 in past years, this will be reviewed during 2006. The session is supervised by Dr Renata Kukuruzovic and the general paediatric fellow. The general medical registrar and residents, CDR registrar and resident and SSU registrar of the day are expected to attend. Pizza and sandwiches are supplied.

The first 4 sessions at the start of each term have an educational focus and provide an introduction to evidence based clinical practice. One of these sessions is a workshop in the library. In the later sessions each unit takes turns at presenting an article, and a staff member from CEBU is present to provide help and guidance on the statistical methods. The focus should be on critical evaluation of a paper and teams are required to provide a copy of the article the week before they present.

Radiology meetings

There is a combined weekly radiology meeting for the general medical units on Thursdays at 1:30 in the Department of Radiology to discuss interesting cases. A list of images for review should be provided to Radiology (by the residents) the day prior.
