Appointments...

Gait analysis is expensive and time consuming and is only useful for certain types of patients. We will therefore only see a patient if asked to by one of three orthopaedic surgeons associated with the Gait Laboratory. These are Professor H.Kerr Graham, Mr Gary Nattrass or Mr Paulo Selber.

To arrange a consultation to discuss whether gait analysis may be useful with any of these doctors you will need a referral from your general practitioner or paediatrician and a current physiotherapy report. An appointment can be made at the RCH Orthopaedic Outpatients by phoning (03) 9345 5858 for public appointments or for privately funded patients appointments can be made by phoning (03) 9345 7979.

After the consultation referral to the Gait Laboratory will be made if appropriate. The Gait Laboratory staff will contact you when your appointment is due. An appointment can usually be issued within 6 weeks of referral.

What to bring...

tick Boys: Bring shorts or boxer shorts and a t-shirt.
tick Girls:
Shorts and a tight t-shirt (preferably singlet type or crop top). NEVER leotards or one piece swimsuits, as these can interfere with marker placement.
tick For all tests, please bring orthoses and mobility aids that are normally used.
tick It is a good idea to bring a snack and drink for your child.

You child's co-operation and concentration is essential for accurate data collection, so please keep those in attendance with you to a minimum.

Sometimes patients are referred to the laboratory inappropriately. If you're a child is less than one metre tall or cannot walk more than 10m (with aids and splints) then it may be worth ringing in advance to ensure that gait analysis is likely to be useful.

Our Location

The Royal Children's Hopital is located on Flemington Road, in Parkville.
It is roughly a 15 minute tram trip from Finders Street Station (on the 59 tram).
There is also a patient car park, costing around $10 per day.

The Gait Lab is located on the Level 3 of the main building.  Take the orange lifts, proceed towards Orthopaedic Outpatient and we are at the end of that corridor.
