About Gait Lab
The Hugh Williamson Gait Analysis Laboratory is a world leader in the analysis of walking disorders in children. Using state of the art equipment our highly specialist staff are able to determine why children walk the way they do. Knowing this it is then possible to plan treatment individually for each child.
We aim to:
Make thorough and reliable measurements of children's walking ability in an efficient and friendly manner.
Provide considered interpretations of these measurements to referring clinicians.
Conduct research to advance our understanding of human walking.
Develop staff and services to allow us to pursue these aims to the highest possible standard.
The aim of this website is to explain to children and their parents why they need gait analysis and what it involves. We hope the information can be understood by older children. Younger children may need it interpreted by their parents. In order to keep the information accessible we have kept it simple.

The laboratory is equipped with the very latest measuring equipment to allow us to perform a range of tests. Depending on how much difficulty you have with walking you may see all or just some of the equipment described here.
All the tests are safe to perform with children, they do not cause any pain but sometimes it can be hard work. If you get tired we will give you a break and a refreshment if you wish.
The gait analysis laboratory itself is simply a room large enough for you to walk up and down in easily. It also needs to be big enough to contain the television cameras which we use to make measurements. It is therefore about 12 metres long and 10 metres wide.
